What is a skin lesion?
A skin lesion simply means an area of skin that looks or feels different from the skin around it. This could be a mole, lump, bump, patch, sore, growth or another change to your skin.
Most skin lesions are harmless, but if you notice something new, changing, unusual or causing symptoms, it is sensible to have it assessed by a specialist.

Treatment using controlled freezing for certain suitable skin lesions.
Skin Biopsy & Curettage
Minor procedures that can help diagnose or treat particular skin lesions.
Skin Surgery
Surgical treatment ranging from minor procedures to larger excisions of skin cancers, where clinically appropriate.
Where a biopsy or surgical treatment is required, procedures carried out at The Wye Clinic are performed under local anaesthetic. Where medication is appropriate, your consultant can also issue a prescription.
Please note: Dr Powell provides medical dermatology assessment and treatment and does not consult on cosmetic procedures.
An initial consultation with Dr Powell costs £240.
Further treatment costs will depend on the investigation or procedure recommended.
Meet Dr James Powell, Consultant Dermatologist
Dr James Powell is an experienced Consultant Dermatologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers and lesions, inflammatory skin reactions and a wide range of dermatological conditions.
He graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in London in 2007 and also achieved a First Class degree in Medical Microbiology, with a focus on infectious diseases. He continues to teach dermatology locally, nationally and internationally and has published in highly respected peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored a book on photodermatology.
Dr Powell has led a tertiary referral team focusing on skin conditions provoked or worsened by sunlight. His specialist expertise, combined with his broad experience in medical and surgical dermatology, enables him to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for a wide variety of skin concerns.
He was Clinical Lead of the British Medical Journal Dermatology Team of the Year in 2021 and was awarded an NHS Digital & Data Award in 2022 as a champion of digital technology.
