Should you settle for a ‘standard’ intraocular lens when you have cataract surgery?

Multifocal and toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer significant advantages for patients undergoing cataract surgery or those seeking vision correction.

Multifocal IOLs are designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances—near, intermediate, and far—by incorporating multiple focal points. This reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery, particularly for tasks like reading, using a computer, and driving. Multifocal lenses improve patients’ quality of life by allowing them to enjoy greater independence from corrective eyewear, particularly as they age and require help for close-up visual tasks. They are ideal for patients who want a more active, lifestyle-focused solution to their vision needs.

Toric IOLs are specifically designed to correct astigmatism, a condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. These lenses are strategically engineered to focus light more precisely onto the retina, reducing blurred or distorted vision. Toric IOLs offer improved visual clarity and contrast sensitivity, which enhances overall visual performance, particularly at night. They are an excellent option for patients with pre-existing astigmatism who want to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective glasses or contact lenses after surgery.

When used together, multifocal and toric IOLs provide comprehensive vision correction, addressing both presbyopia and astigmatism, and significantly improving visual outcomes after cataract surgery
